TTMIK Iyagi #11 (Translation)

Translation note: There are a lot of little parenthetical interjections, but I didn’t translate them unless necessary because they’re more of a function of Korean pragmatics - you’re supposed to verbally indicate that you’re listening - and would be annoying or worse if it were done in English.  Also, I almost always error on the side of producing more natural English that captures the feeling of the original rather than trying to stick too closely to the exact words used.  And most of this was fairly straightforward, but there were definitely parts where I totally just guessed.  So if you disagree with anything or have suggestions or questions, leave a comment or send me an ask and let me know!

K: Hello.  This is Talk To Me In Korean’s Iyagi (dialogue).

선현우 : 안녕하세요. 선현우입니다.

H: Hello.  I’m Hyunoo Sun.

최경은 : 안녕하세요. 최경은입니다.

K: Hello, I’m Kyeongeun Choi

선현우 : 경은 씨, 안녕하세요?

H: Hi, Kyeongeun.

최경은 : 네, 안녕하세요?

K: Hi.

선현우 : 오늘 다시 경은 씨하고 (네) 이렇게 이야기 레슨을 녹음을 하는데 (네) 오늘 주제가 굉장히 재미있다고 들었어요.

H: Today I’m doing another one of these Iyagi lessons with Kyeongeun, and I heard today’s subject is really interesting.

최경은 : 네. 아르바이트.

K: Yeah, part-time jobs.

선현우 : 아르바이트. 음… 아르바이트라는 단어는 사실 한국어 단어는 아니었어요. 그렇죠?

H: Part-time jobs.  Hmm…’a-reu-ba-i-teu’ is actually not a Korean word, is it?

최경은 : 네, 맞아요.

K: Right.

선현우 : 원래는 독일어에서 (아…) 온 단어이고 제가 알기로는 원래 독일어에서 일본으로 갔다가 (음…) 다시 일본에서 한국으로 들어 온 단어라고 들었어요. (아, 그래요?) 네.  원래 독일어에 “arbeite”라는 단어가 “아르바이트”, 이렇게 된 것 같은데…

H: It’s originally from German, and I’ve heard that it originally came from Germany to Japan, and then again from Japan into Korea.  (Oh, really?)  Yeah.  The word ‘a-reu-ba-i-teu’ was originally the German word ‘arbeite’; I think that’s how it happened.

최경은 : 아, 그렇군요.

K: Oh, okay.

선현우 : 네. 그런데 아직도 아르바이트라는 단어를 쓰는 이유가 뭘까요?

H: Yeah.  But why do you think we use the word ‘a-reu-ba-i-teu’, even now?

최경은 : 글쎄요? 한국에서 아르바이트가 생긴 지 얼마 안 돼서 그런가요?

K: Well…is it because it hasn’t been long that Korea has had part-time jobs?

선현우 : 아… 아르바이트라는 이 개념이. (네) 음… 그럴 수도 있겠어요. (네) 그럴 수도 있고, 다른 단어가 없어요. 그렇죠?

H: Oh…just the idea of part-time jobs.  Hmm…that might be the case.  That might be the case, and there was no other word for it.  Right?

최경은 : 맞아요.

K: Right.

선현우 : 뭐, 파트 타임, 영어에서 온 파트 타임이라는 말도 있고. 뭐, 글쎄요. 별로 없는 것 같아요.

H: Like, there’s ‘pa-teu ta-im’ - there’s also ‘pa-teu ta-im’ from English.  Like, well.  I don’t think there are that many.

최경은 : 네. 그냥 아르바이트라고 하고 (네) 요즘에는 줄여서 알바라고 하죠?

K: Yeah.  Just ‘a-reu-ba-i-teu’ and, these days it’s shortened to ‘al-ba’, isn’t it?

선현우 : 맞아요. 알바라고 하고, 뭐, 알바몬, 알바 뭐뭐뭐, 이런 싸이트도 있잖아요? (네, 웹사이트) 웹사이트도 생겨서 이제 그냥 알바가 (알바) 평소에 많이 쓰이고 (네) 길게 아르바이트라고 할 때도 있어요.

H: Right.  There’s ‘al-ba’ and, like, ‘al-ba-mon’, ‘al-ba-blah-blah-blah’, and there’s sites like that too, you know. (Yeah, websites.)  There are also websites that come up now that just use ‘al-ba’ a lot usually, and there are also ones that use the long version ‘a-reu-ba-i-teu’.

최경은 : 네, 맞아요.

K: Yeah, right.

선현우 : 경은 씨는 (네) 아르바이트 많이 해 봤어요?

H: Kyeongeun, have you done a lot of part-time jobs?

최경은 : 네, 많이 해 봤어요.

K: Yeah, I’ve done a lot.

선현우 : 잠깐만요. 그런데 보통 아르바이트는 누가 해요?

H: Wait a sec.  But usually who are the people who do part-time jobs?

최경은 : 음… 보통 학생들이 많이 하죠.

K: Um…usually students do them a lot, right?

선현우 : 학생들이 보통 많이 하고, (네) 요즘에는 학생이 아닌 사람도 아르바이트를 하죠?

H: Students usually do them a lot, and these days aren’t there people other than students who have part-time jobs?

최경은 : 음… 맞아요.

K: Hmm, yeah.

선현우 : 옛날에는 그냥 고등학생, 대학생 (네) 이 정도 (네) 그랬는데 요즘에는 다른 일을 하다가 (네) 잠깐 쉬고 (네) 하루 종일 일하고 싶지 않으니까 (그렇죠) 다른 공부도 하고 싶고, 뭐, 다른 일도 준비하고 싶으면 잠깐 아르바이트를 하는 사람도 있어요.

H: It used to be just high school students, college students, and so on, but these days there are people who, after doing other things and resting a bit, they don’t want to work all day long every day.  They want to study other things, like, if they want to prepare for other things, they can do part-time jobs for a bit.

최경은 : 네. 그리고 요즘에는 취업이 잘 안 돼서,

K: Yeah.  And these days there’s a lot of unemployment, so…

선현우 : 음, 직업을 찾는 게 좀 어려워서,

H: Hmm, it’s a bit hard to find a job, so…

최경은 : 네. 어렵죠. (네) 그래서 우선 취업하기 전에 아르바이트를 하면서 취업 준비를 하는 사람이 많아요.

K: Yeah.  It’s hard, huh?  So before finding entry-level employment, there are a lot of people who prepare for a job while doing part-time work.

선현우 : 네, 맞아요. 그리고 자기가 정말 하고 싶은 다른 일을 하기 전에 (네) 돈을 벌어야 하니까 (맞아요) 네. 그 때까지만 아르바이트를 하는 사람들도 많이 있어요.

H: Yeah, right.  And before they do the other things they really want to do, they have to save money, so yeah.  Until then, though, there are a lot of people who do part-time work.

최경은 : 네.

K: Yeah.

선현우 : 그런데 경은 씨는 아르바이트를 많이 해 봤다고 하는데, 보통 사람들은 어떤 아르바이트를 해요? 그리고 경은 씨는 어떤 아르바이트를 해 봤어요?

H: But Kyeongeun, you said you had a lot of part-time jobs, so usually what kind of part-time jobs do people do?  And what kind have you done?

최경은 : 음… 보통 학생들은 과외를 많이 하죠. (네) 우리나라에서는?

K: Hmm…usually students do a lot of tutoring, right?  In Korea?

선현우 : 대학생들이 많이 하죠?

H: College students do it a lot, yeah?

최경은 : 네. 대학생들은 과외를 많이 하고, (네) 사실 저는 고등학교 때는 안 해 봤어요.

K: Yeah.  College students do a lot of tutoring, and actually I didn’t do any in high school.

선현우 : 아… 아르바이트를?

H: Oh…a part-time job?

최경은 : 네. 아르바이트를 안 해 봐서 고등학교 때는 잘 모르겠고요. (네) 대학교 때는 여러가지 아르바이트를 해 봤는데, (네) 신기한 거 많았어요.

K: Right.  I didn’t have a part-time job so I’m not sure about during high school.  In college, I did different kinds of part-time work, so there were a lot of interesting opportunities.

선현우 : 아… 그래요? 어떤 신기한 아르바이트가 있었어요?

H: Oh, really?  What kind of part-time opportunities were there?

최경은 : 어… 제일 신기한 건 교통량 조사 아르바이트.

K: Oh, the most interesting thing was my part-time job doing a traffic survey.

선현우 : 교통량 조사?

H: A traffic survey?

최경은 : 옛날에는, 10년 전에는, (네, 네)

K: In the old days, 10 years ago…

선현우 : 10년 전에

H: 10 years ago…

최경은 : 아, 나이가 밝혀지네요.

K: Oh no, I’ve revealed my age!

선현우 : 아니에요.

H: No, you’re fine.

최경은 : 10년 전에는 (네) 이 도로에 버스가 몇 대 지나가고 승용차가 몇 대 지나가는 지를 조사를 했어요.

K: 10 years ago, I did a survey on this road to see how many buses were passing and how many passenger cars were passing.

선현우 : 아… 교통량?

H: Oh…traffic volume?

최경은 : 네. 교통량 조사.

K: Yeah.  A traffic survey.

선현우 : 교통의 양을 (네) 조사하는 (네) 아르바이트. (네) 얼마 동안 했어요?

H: Part-time work, taking a survey of the volume of traffic.  How long did you do it for?

최경은 : 잠깐 했어요. 잠깐.

K: I did it for a little bit.  A little bit.

선현우 : 잠깐?

H: A little bit?

최경은 : 네. 그냥 친구가 이런 아르바이트도 있다. 신기하다 해서 한 번 해 봤고요.

K: Yeah.  Just, my friend also did that kind of part-time work.  And I tried it once, for the novelty.

선현우 : 아, 경험을 위해서.

H: Ah, for the experience

최경은 : 네. 경험을 위해서 해 봤고. (네) 가장 좋았던 건, 어…, 시험 감독.

K: Yeah.  I did it for the experience.  The one I liked the most was…uh…being a test proctor.

선현우 : 시험 감독?

H: A test proctor?

최경은 : 네.

K: Yeah.

선현우 : 또, 또. 또 뭐 있어요?

More, more.  What else is there?

최경은 : 또? 시험 감독도 했고. (네) 그리고 결혼식 가서 (네) 신부 들러리 하는 거 했었어요.

More?  I was a test proctor.  And I went to weddings and was a bridesmaid.

선현우 : 아, 정말요?

H: Oh, really?

최경은 : 그거 좀 재미있었어요.

K: That was kind of fun.

선현우 : 신부 뒤에서,

H: Behind the bride,

최경은 : 네. 신부 뒤에서 웨딩드레스 잡아 주고 (네) “어떻게 하세요.”라고 알려 주는 그런 들러리가 있어요. (네) 도우미라고 하나요?

K: Yeah.  Behind the bride, I held her dress, and let her know, “Do it like this,” that kind of bridesmaid.  Like an assistant? 

선현우 : 요즘에 도우미라고 하는 것 같아요.

H: These days I think it’s called an assistant.

최경은 : 네. 도우미 역할도 해 봤었어요. (아… 우와) 되게 여러 가지 많이 했고요. (네) 또 악세사리도 팔았었어요.

K: Right.  I also did assistant duties.  I did a ton of things.  And I also used to sell accessories.

선현우 : 아, 정말요? (네) 어디에서요?

H: Oh, really?  Where?

최경은 : 그거는 한국에서 한 건 아니고 호주에 갔을 때 (네) 한국 악세사리를 팔았었어요. 그런 아르바이트도 했었고요. 되게 다양하게 많이 했죠?

K: I didn’t do it in Korea; when I went to Australia, I sold Korean accessories.  I did that kind of part-time work, too.  I really did a lot of different things, huh?

선현우 : 우와… 저랑 비교하면 (네) 정말 많이 했어요.

H: Wow…compared to me you really did a lot.

최경은 : 네, 신기한 것들. (네) 많이 했어요.

K: Yeah, a lot of new things.  I did a lot.

선현우 : 저는 그런 아르바이트는 해 본 적이 없고 (네) 저는 너무 간단한 거.

H: I never tried those kinds of part-time jobs; mine were really simple.

최경은 : 과외?

K: Tutoring?

선현우 : 예. 과외만 했어요. 저는 고등학교 때 부터 과외를 했거든요.

H: Yes.  I only did tutoring.  I did tutoring work starting in high school.

최경은 : 진짜요?

K: Really?

선현우 : 네. 고3 때부터 과외를 했는데 과외라는 것이 뭔지 잘 모르시는 분이 계시면, 과외는 개인 수업이에요.

H: Yeah.  Since senior year, I’ve done tutoring.  If there are people who don’t know what tutoring is, it’s personal study.

최경은 : 네. 일대일로.

K: Yeah.  One-on-one.

선현우 : “과”라는 것은 학교 수업 과목을 말하는 거고 그 다음에 “외”는 바깥, 그래서 학교에서 수업 받는 것 외에 밖에서 또 수업을 받는 거라서 “과외”인데 과외활동 이런 것들은 학교 끝나고 태권도를 배우러 가거나 아니면 피아노를 배우러 가거나 이런 거를 과외 활동이라고 하는데, 이제 학교에서는 수업을 받아야 되는데 (네) 또 집에 가서 또 과외 수업을 받는 거예요. (맞아요) 그래서 그거를 과외 수업, 과외 수업, 과외. 그래서 과외라고 하면 그냥 개인 수업을 말해요.

H: ‘Kwa’ means school lessons, like ‘kwa-mok’ (subject), and ‘way’ means ‘outside’, so receiving lessons outside of school is called ‘kwa-way’.  And these kinds of tutoring activities are after school finishes, like going to learn taekwondo or going to learn the piano, these kinds of things are called activities, and these days you have to take lessons in school, and then you go home or go to get tutored.   So it’s like extracurricular activities, extracurricular activities, tutoring.  So when you talk about tutoring you’re just talking about individual lessons.

최경은 : 네. 그런데 보통 태권도를 배우거나 (네) 피아노를 배우거나 같은 그런 활동은 과외라고 하지는 않고 (음…) 그냥 학원에 간다 (네) 이렇게 말을 하는데 아르바이트로 과외를 했다는 것은 일대일로 가르쳐 준다는 거죠?

K: Right.  But usually we don’t use ‘kwa-way’ for learning taekwondo, learning piano, those kinds of things…just going to ‘hag-wons’ (private academies), we use the word for that, and the part-time job ‘kwa-way’ is used when you’re teaching one-on-one, right?

선현우 : 그렇죠. 일대일로, 뭐, 영어, 수학, 아니면 국어 (네) 국어는 한국어죠?

H: Right.  One-on-one, like, English, math, or language arts.  Language arts means Korean, right?

최경은 : 한국어

K: Korean.

선현우 : 그리고 과학, (네) 이런 것들을 가르쳐 주는데 저는 영어를 주로 많이 가르쳤고…

H: And science, you teach these kinds of things, and I usually taught English a lot, and…

최경은 : 고3 때?

K: In senior year of high school?

선현우 : 네. 고3 때 중학교 학생들을 가르쳤었고 그리고 대학교에 가서는 고등학생 과외도 하고 그리고 대학생 과외도 하고 그리고 또 수학도 가르쳤었어요.

H: Yeah.  I taught ninth graders, and after I went to college I tutored high schoolers too, and I also tutored college students, and I also taught math.

최경은 : 아, 그래요? (네) 오… 신기하네요.

K: Oh, really?  Oh…that’s interesting.

선현우 : 그래서 저는 주로 아르바이트를 가르치는 일을 많이 했던 것 같아요. (음…) 지금도 가르치는 일을 하고 있지만.

H: So I think I usually did a lot of teaching as my part-time job.  I’m still teaching now, but…

최경은 : 그런데 보통 고3들은 과외를 절대 안 하죠? (그렇죠) 과외를 받죠, 보통 고3들은. (저는 그런데) 지금 잘난 척 하는 거죠? 똑똑하다고. (네)

K: But usually high school seniors never tutor, right? (Right.)  Usually they get tutored, high school seniors. (Except me.)  Now you’re acting superior, huh?  And smart.

선현우 : 아니, 그냥 재미있었다고, (아… 네) 경은 씨가 특별한 아르바이트를 많이 했듯이 저는 특별히 고3 때 (네) 과외를 했으니까.

H: No, I’m just saying it was fun, and…just like you did a lot of special part-time jobs, I was special for tutoring in senior year of high school.

최경은 : 한국 사람들이 (네) 보통은 고3 때 과외를 받죠? 과외를 아르바이트로 하지는 않아요, 잘. (네, 네)

K: Korean people usually get tutored in their senior years, right?  They don’t usually tutor much as a part-time job.

선현우 : 저는 수능 시험도 다 끝나고 12월부터 시작을 했어요. (아…) 아직 졸업하기 전에. (네, 네) 그래서 방학 때 시작을 했고 그리고 서울에 와서 과외를 했는데 저는 과외를 한 것은 특별하지 않아요. 다른 사람들도 많이 하니까 (네) 그런데 저는 과외를 할 때 그 과외 학생을 만나야 과외를 할 수 있잖아요?

I also finished the Korean SAT and started by December.  Before I’d graduated yet.  So during vacation I started and then I went to Seoul and tutored, but I wasn’t the only one tutoring.  Other people did it a lot, too.  And when I was tutoring, I had to meet students to tutor, of course.

최경은 : 네.

K: Right.

선현우 : 어디에서 과외 학생을 찾을 수가 있는가? 이런 고민들을 항상 하잖아요.

H: Where could I meet students to tutor?  I was always agonizing over that, you know.

최경은 : 네.

K: Yeah.

선현우 : 저는 그게 정말 좀 특별했어요.

H: I was really a little special in that way.

최경은 : 어떻게요?

K: How so?

선현우 : 한 번은 미용실에 가서 머리를 자르고 있었어요. 그런데 머리를 잘라 주시는 그 미용사? (네) 미용사 아주머니의 아들. 과외를 하게 됐고.

One time I went to a beauty salon and was having my hair cut.  And the stylist cutting my hair?  The stylist’s son.  I started tutoring him.

최경은 : 어….

K: Oh…

선현우 : 그리고 또 한 번은 친구가 아르바이트를 하고 있는 레코드 전문점. (어….) 음악 CD, 테이프 이런 것을 파는 데. (네) 거기에 몇 번 놀러갔다가 거기 주인 아저씨의 아들, 딸 과외를 하고.

H: And another time a friend was at their part-time job at a record shop…a place that sells music CDs, tapes, those kinds of things.  I went there to hang out a bunch of times, and I ended up tutoring the owner’s son and daughter.

최경은 : 어, 진짜요?

K: Oh, really?

선현우 : 네. 그리고 그냥 친구랑 놀다가 친구가 유학을 가게 된 거예요. (네) 그래서 친구의 학생을 또 제가 가르치고, 그런 식으로 과외를 많이 했어요.

H: Yeah.  And a friend I used to hang out with went to study abroad, so I also taught my friend’s students, and I ended up tutoring a lot that way.

최경은 : 잘난 척이네요.

K: You’re acting superior. 

선현우 : 예? 왜요? 왜요? 왜 그렇죠?

H: What?  Why?  Why?  Why do you say that?

최경은 : 잘난 척인 것 같은데?

K: It feels like you’re acting superior.

선현우 : 특별한 과외.

H: Special tutoring.

최경은 : 아… 그렇군요.

K: Ah…I see how it is.

선현우 : 과외 학생을 만나게 된 특별한 방법. 그래서 재미있었고.

H: It’s a special way to find students to tutor.  So it was fun.

최경은 : 신기하네요.

K: That’s interesting.

선현우 : 네, 신기해요. 그리고…

H: Yeah, it’s interesting.  And…

최경은 : 성적은 많이 올랐어요? 학생들?

K: Did their grades go up a lot?  The students?

선현우 : 물론이죠, 물론이죠. 당연하죠. (네) 그래서 보통 과외 아르바이트로 많이 하고 (네) 경은 씨처럼 특별한 아르바이트 많이 하는데 과외가 아니고, 또는 아주 특별한 아르바이트가 아니면 보통 뭘 하죠?

H: Of course, of course.  Naturally.  So usually people do a lot of tutoring work, or special part-time work like Kyeongeun that’s not tutoring, but what other special part-time jobs do people usually do?

최경은 : 음…

K: Um…

선현우 : 서빙?

H: Service?

최경은 : 네. 서빙 많이 하죠.

K: Yeah, they do a lot of service, right.

선현우 : 서빙 많이 하고, 그리고… 글쎄요. 서빙 말고 사무실.

H: They do a lot of serving, and…well.  Other than service, office work.

최경은 : 네, 사무실에서 아르바이트도 하고.

Yeah, they also do part-time work at offices.

선현우 : 그런 거를 보통 사무 보조라고 하는데 사무실에 가서 문서 작업.

We usually call that office assistance, going to an office and working with documents.

최경은 : 네, 맞아요.

K: Right.

선현우 : 연구소, 아니면 대학교.

H: Research labs, or colleges.

최경은 : 네. 저도 해 봤어요. 사무 보조.

K: Yeah, I also did that.  Office assistance.

선현우 : 대학교에서 사실 아르바이트 하는 거 많이 있는데. (음 맞아요) 제가 저희 대학교, 제가 학교에 다닐 때 봤던 재미있는 아르바이트들 중 하나는 도서관? 도서관에 책을 빌리러 갈 때가 있잖아요?

You seriously did a lot of part-time jobs in college.  Me, my college -except for the school I used to go to - one of the fun part-time jobs is library work?  You can go to the library and borrow books, right?

최경은 : 네.

K: Yeah.

선현우 : 그런데 책을 빌리러 가는 거 말고 그냥 공부하러 가는 사람들도 있어요.

But other than borrowing books there are also people who go to study.

최경은 : 그렇죠. 많아요.

Right.  There’s a lot of them.

선현우 : 예, 그런 거를 “열람실” 이렇게 말 하는데 열람실에 가려면 학생증이 필요하잖아요. (네) 학생증, 학생 카드를 그 문에 “틱”하고 이렇게 대고 들어가는데 그거를 안 가져온 다른 학교 학생들, 아니면 학생이 아닌 사람들이 들어가면 안 되니까 (네) 그 앞에 책상을 놓고 앉아서

Yeah, that kind of thing is called a ‘reading room’, and to sort out the reading room, students need student IDs, you know.  Student IDs, student cards, you put a ‘tick’ on them and go in.  That was to separate out other schools’ students, or people who weren’t students, since they weren’t allowed to go in.  You put a desk in front and sit there.

최경은 : 진짜요?

K: Really?

선현우 : 그냥 보는 거예요. 보는데 보는 것만 할 필요는 없어요. 자기 공부를 할 수 있어요. 그래서 자기 공부를 하면서 사람들이 카드를 찍나 안 찍나 (네) 보는 거예요. (아…) 그런 아르바이트가 있어요.

H: It’s just looking.  They look, they just need to look.  You can study on your  own.  So while you’re studying on your own, people look and see if the card has a stamp or not.  There’s that kind of part-time job.

최경은 : 오, 그래요? 저는 처음 들었어요. (네) 보통 열람실에 책도 빌릴 수 있으니까, 책을 빌려 주기도 하고 감시하기도 하는, 그렇게 같이 일을 하지 않나요?

K: Oh, really?  I’d never heard that before.  Usually, since you can borrow books in the reading room too, lending books and observing, isn’t there also work like that?

선현우 : 예, 그런 사람도 있고. (감시만 하는) 저희 학교 같은 경우는 책 빌리는 곳 따로 (아…) 그리고 공부하는 곳 따로 있는 경우도 있어서 보는 거예요. 그냥 보고 앉아 있으면 한 시간에 5,500원씩 주는.

H: Yeah, there’s also people like that.  For my school though, there was a separate place to borrow books and a separate place to study, so it was just looking.  Just looking and sitting, and you got 5,500 won an hour.

최경은 : 우와. 좋은데요?

K: Wow.  That sounds nice.

선현우 : 그래서 수업 받다가 수업이 없는 시간에 가서 앉아 있어요.

H: So after going to class, during times when you didn’t have class, you went and sat.

최경은 : 우와. 신의 아르바이트인데요?

K: Wow.  A heavenly job.

선현우 : 신의 아르바이트요?

H: A heavenly job?

최경은 : 제 친구들하고 저는 이렇게 쉬운 아르바이트를 신의 아르바이트라고 했었어요.

K: My friends and I called jobs where you just rest like that, heavenly jobs.

최경은 : 어, 그럴 것 같아요.

K: Yeah, I would think so.

선현우 : 자기가 하고 싶어서 먼저 경쟁이 심하고 자리가 잘 안 생겨요. 네. 아무튼 그런 아르바이트들이 있어요.

Everyone wanted to do it, so the competition was tough at first and there weren’t a lot of positions.  Anyway, there were those kinds of jobs.
